Indigenous Culture, History & Heritage Training programs

Cultural Awareness

One of the major roles of Kuracca is to address the Findings of the Bringing Them Home Report and the Recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody, by specifically addressing and focusing on the implementation of the Kuracca Indigenous Culture, History & Heritage Training Program.

Indigenous Culture, History & Heritage Training programs are training programs for Indigenous and non-Indigenous People. Course structure provides participants with information & skills that will not only increase their own knowledge in relation to the history of this country, but also provides professional workplace and personal skills development that allow better communication & protocol between both Indigenous & non-Indigenous Peoples to take place.

Kuracca Consultancy has conducted and been involved in the development and implementation of relevant training for Community Organisations, Government Departments, Community members and other agencies such as:

  • Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal community organisations;
  • Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Medical Service;
  • ATCOSS
  • The Prime Ministers Department; Premier’s Department (NSW);
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing Unit, Ageing & Disability;
  • Health Insurance Commission;
  • Relationship Australia;
  • Women’s centres;
  • and many more.

Due to the success of the training Kuracca is consistently re-employed by the Departments and organisations.

Program evaluation is a key strategy utilised by Kuracca to ensure that the needs of the Department, community organisation and individual participant’s needs are met.

Listed below are some responses from participants attending a course.

Do you think what you have learnt in this course will alter or impact on the way you consider policy and service delivery? If so what changes will you implement back in the workplace?

  • Greater need for tolerance and understanding – live beliefs.
  • Genuine need for non-discriminatory practices;
  • Impact yes- depth of my understanding of Aboriginality;
  • Certainly will – you think you are pretty aware of the way things are but my eyes were certainly opened to how ‘conventional’ my understanding has been;
  • The things I have learnt have reinforced my knowledge but I was already conscious of the problems Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people face;
  • Think twice and make every word or deed count;
  • Yes it has given me new understanding and perspective – will share this understanding with others.

Has this course dispelled any misconceptions you had about Indigenous people? If yes, what?

  • Yes, taken away the stereotype image by understanding their heritage and spirituality;
  • Not so much misconceptions as incomplete understanding eg; skin groups, eye contact etc;
  • Reinforced understanding of what it means to be ‘Aboriginal’ – but, really hit home the reality of what it means to be ‘Aboriginal’ with the responsibilities to ‘Nation” and Country.’
