Kerry Reed-Gilbert

A well-known Aboriginal woman writer Kerry has performed and conducted writing workshops nationally and internationally. Through her writing, Kerry believes she is true to her Totem, which is the white cockatoo, and means messenger, her writing allows her to be that messenger and address the issues, concerns and interests that are relevant to Indigenous people today.

2006 saw Kerry being recongised by the International Society of Poets with an 'Outstanding Achievement in Poetry' award and a 'Poet of Merit' Award.

In 2005 she toured Aotearoa, New Zealand as part of the Honouring Words 3rd International Indigenous Authors Celebration Tour

In 2003 she was awarded an International Residence from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Board (ATSIAB) to attend Art Omi, Hudson River Valley New York, USA.

In 1997 she toured South Africa as a performance poet performing in ‘ECHOES’ a national tour of the spoken word

Kerry’s many talents include poet, writer, editor, graphic designer, photographer, curator, and publisher.

Performances

She has performed in numerous events nationally and internationally as a performance poet and keynote speaker.

Writers Workshops

Kerry has conducted and attended various writers workshops nationally and internationally. She was selected to participate in the ‘Master Classes for Aboriginal writers’ with award winning writer Kate Grenville by the Aboriginal Arts Board.

With the combination of her written works and her photography she allows the audience to share not only the beauty of this land but also to glimpse the impact of colonisation on both the land and the original owners, Kerry invites the audience to ‘walk in her footprints’ as she journeys through this lifetime. Her works have been published in different books, catalogues and magazines.

She has been published in numerous books and publications such as Untreated (IAD Press) 2001, Voices of Aboriginal Australia – past, present and future (Butterfly Press) 1995 including publications from the Worlds Congress of Poets. Her works has been translated in Korean and other non English speaking languages.
